Hearing Aid Care and Cleaning

HearingAidCare2 Hearing Aid Care and Cleaning

Modern hearing aids represent the pinnacle in miniaturized electronic technology, yet they’re forced to operate in a relatively hostile environment of heat, perspiration, and earwax, along with a variety of foreign substances that can easily enter the ear. These can all result in degraded hearing performance.

The overwhelming majority of all hearing aid problems we see are related to the accumulation of moisture and earwax inside the hearing aid. Most of the problems like these can result in a repair charge that is imminently preventable with good cleaning practices.

To ensure dependable, trouble-free service, we recommend a daily regimen of cleaning and simple maintenance practices. Here are some simple tips to keep your hearing aids in tip-top condition:

  1. Store your hearing aids in a safe, dry place protected from direct sunlight and other heat sources.
  2. Don’t use aerosol products like hair spray or spray paint around your hearing aids, as it may eventually accumulate in the microphone port and render it in-operational.
  3. Be sure to store them well away from pets and small children.
  4. Open the battery drawer at night to extend the life of the hearing aid and preserve battery life.

We counsel our patients to perform all cleaning and battery changes over a soft towel on top of a firm and steady table. Proper technique will prevent damage to your hearing aid if you accidentally drop one on a hard surface.

Because hearing aid circuits are primarily electronic, excess moisture is their number one enemy. By cleaning your hearing aids after each use and to remove moisture accumulation, keep your hearing aids in a dry-aid kit each night!

Because moisture is the bane of sensitive, electronic hearing aid circuits, we suggest keeping hearing aids in a dry-aid kit each night.

A hearing aid that’s well-maintained can easily last 3 to 5 years, if not longer.
